ATB-20-26.19 Conneaut Viaduct Replacement - City of Conneaut, Ohio |
Ohio Department of Transportation
- District 4
|
The project consisted of replacing
the structurally deficient Conneaut Viaduct which carries U.S. 20 over Conneaut
Creek and the active Bessemer and Lake Erie railroad tracks. The project also
improved geometrics of the western approach area by eliminating an abrupt
horizontal deflection. |

 |
The new structure is a
two-lane, eight span, continuous, prestressed concrete I-beam bridge, with
a composite reinforced concrete deck supported on a reinforced concrete
substructure on new alignment adjacent to and immediately south of the
existing structure. It also has cap and column type piers (open design)
and an open style concrete railing, similar in appearance to the existing.
Ornamental light fixtures are installed on the new bridge similar to the
lighting fixtures currently in use in downtown Conneaut. Replacement of
the viaduct on a new alignment enabled traffic to use the existing bridge
while the new bridge was under construction, reducing the length of
closure and detour time. Roadway approach work and intersection work was
also included in the project. |
|
In addition to
field survey, design, and construction plan preparation, the project involved
extensive environmental studies and coordination. The Conneaut Viaduct was an
historic structure eligible for the National Register. A Memorandum of
Agreement was prepared containing numerous stipulations approved by the Ohio
State Historic Preservation Office to mitigate the adverse effect of removing
the existing structure. Other environmental studies included extensive
ecological studies due to the presence of wetlands and the high quality Conneaut
Creek. Additionally, Phase II ESA work and remedial investigations were
performed on several commercial properties with documented soil and ground water
contamination. |
