As part of its Landscape for Learning endeavor, the
University of Akron retained McCoy Associates, Inc., to upgrade its athletic
practice field complex. The centerpiece is a 120-by-65 yard synthetic turf field
for its athletic teams and 50-by-60 yard natural grass surface, which will
provide additional practice space for the football squad and men's and women's
soccer teams. Despite encountering unrecorded building foundations and utility
lines on the site, McCoy Associates worked around those problems and designed a
first-class facility that allows the football team and marching band to practice
on campus, rather than having to drive to an off-campus stadium. The facility,
which also is used for intramural athletics, has contributed to a "new sense of
campus," according to University of Akron Athletic Director Mike Thomas. |

In summer 2003, torrential storms brought
flooding and extensive property damage to more than 700 homes in Cuyahoga Falls
in northeast Ohio. It was declared a federal disaster area. The city hired McCoy
Associates, Inc., to create and implement The Flood Prevention Initiative, an
innovative program that identified causes of the flooding and assist in the
public education of the problems and solutions. After doing 450 home
inspections, McCoy determined the most severe problem was clean rainwater
entering sanitary sewers and overloading the system. By educating homeowners in
a non-technical manner through report cards, the program gained overwhelming
support and the city is on its way to addressing these problems. |
